How zalgo actually works

Zalgo stacks combining diacritical marks onto ordinary letters. A combining mark has no width of its own — the renderer draws it on top of the previous character — so you can attach dozens to a single letter and they pile up above and below the line. The base text is untouched underneath, which is why you can still read the word when the marks are light.

Most generators randomise the marks, so pressing the button twice gives two different results. This one is deterministic: the same input always produces the same output. That matters if you want to reuse a name consistently, or check that what you pasted matches what you copied.

Choose an intensity that fits the destination

Light zalgo keeps the word readable and works in most places. Standard zalgo is the recognisable cursed look. Heavy zalgo overflows its line dramatically and is where problems start: apps clip it, chat lists overlap, and some platforms strip long mark sequences during normalisation.

Above-only and below-only variants are useful compromises. Keeping the marks on one side prevents overlap with the line above or below, so text stays usable in a list.

• Light: readable, widely safe
• Standard: the classic look, fine in messages and posts
• Heavy: expect clipping, stripping and moderator attention

Where not to use it

Many Discord servers and game communities ban zalgo in names because tall stacks break their member lists. Screen readers may attempt to announce every mark, turning one word into a long stream of speech. And because the marks are real characters, heavy zalgo can multiply a short phrase into hundreds of characters and blow through a length limit.

Treat it as an effect for posts and art, not for a name people have to live with.
