Use markdown in messages, Unicode in names

Discord already formats messages: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~ and backticks for code. Inside a message, that markdown is the better choice — it stays searchable, screen readers handle it correctly, and it renders identically for everyone.

Unicode styling earns its place in the fields markdown cannot reach: your server nickname, the server name, category and channel names, channel topics, role names and your global display name. Those fields render the characters literally, which is exactly what you want.

• Nicknames and display names: Unicode works, up to 32 characters
• Messages: prefer Discord markdown, keep Unicode for accents
• Unique @username: lower-case letters, numbers, dots and underscores only

Why styled names sometimes look misaligned

Discord ships its own interface font. When a character is missing from it, the app falls back to another font on your system, and the substitute may sit slightly higher or lower than the surrounding text. That is why a blackletter nickname can look a little off-baseline in the member list while looking perfect elsewhere.

Mathematical bold, italic, blackletter, monospace and small caps have the best coverage in practice. Enclosed and blocky glyphs are more likely to fall back.

Moderation and searchability

Server search matches the characters as typed, so a member with a styled nickname is hard to find by plain spelling — worth remembering before you rename an entire staff team. Many servers also run auto-moderation that flags unusual characters or heavy zalgo, since stacked combining marks can break layout in the member list. If a server asks for readable names, that is why.
