Blackletter, Fraktur, gothic — same thing, different names

Blackletter is the family of dense, angular scripts used across Europe for centuries before roman type took over. Fraktur is one specific style within it, and it is the name Unicode uses. Everyday searches call all of it “gothic”, which is why this page does too.

Unicode provides a light Fraktur alphabet and a bold one. Five capitals in the light set come from the Letterlike Symbols block, encoded earlier for mathematics, so their weight can differ very slightly on some devices.

Legibility is the real constraint

Blackletter lower case is genuinely hard to read at small sizes: the strokes are dense and several letters share a similar skeleton. Capitals are much more distinctive. That is why band logos and tattoos tend to use blackletter capitals with plain lower case, and why a gothic username reads better in four letters than in fourteen.

The wide variant on this page adds spacing between characters, which recovers a surprising amount of readability without losing the style.

A note on history

Blackletter carries historical baggage in some contexts, particularly in Germany, where specific Fraktur styles were bound up with twentieth-century politics. The letterforms themselves are much older than that association, and today they mostly signal metal music, tattoo culture and fantasy settings. It is still worth being aware of the context if you are designing for a German-speaking audience.
