How the line is drawn
A combining long stroke overlay is inserted after every character. Combining marks occupy no width, so the renderer draws the stroke across the letter that precedes it, producing an unbroken line along the word. The letters underneath are unchanged, which is why struck-through text remains readable if the mark fails to render and why the underlying word still matches a search.
The short-stroke variant leaves small gaps between letters. Some people prefer it; it also survives slightly better in apps with unusual line spacing.
Use built-in strikethrough where it exists
WhatsApp strikes text between tildes, Discord between double tildes, and most rich editors have a button. Those are better inside a message: they are semantic, searchable and readable by assistive technology. Unicode strikethrough is for the fields that offer nothing — a bio, a spreadsheet cell, a display name, a form.
A practical use is a price change or a corrected line: the old value struck through, the new one plain. Readers understand the convention instantly.

Where it can go wrong
Combining marks attach to whatever precedes them, so if a platform trims or reflows your text mid-word, a stray mark can land on the wrong character. Some systems also normalise input and drop the marks entirely — you paste struck-through text and it saves as plain. Check the field once before relying on it.

Why did the line disappear after I posted?
The platform normalised or stripped the combining marks. Nothing is wrong with the text you copied; that destination removes marks on submission. Try the short-stroke variant, or use the app’s own strikethrough.
Does strikethrough text stay searchable?
Yes, mostly. The base letters are unchanged, so a search for the plain word can still match — unlike substitution styles such as bold or script, where the letters themselves are different characters.
Why is the line broken between letters?
That is the short-stroke variant, or a font whose glyph for the mark is narrower than the letter. Switch to the long stroke for a continuous line.
Can I strike through numbers and symbols?
Yes. The mark is applied to every non-space character regardless of what it is, so prices, dates and punctuation all work.
