Sans bold or serif bold?

Sans bold is the workhorse: clean, modern, and closest to the interface font of most apps, so it blends in while still standing out. Serif bold is heavier and more formal, with thick and thin strokes that suggest print. For a single word inside a sentence, sans bold looks intentional; serif bold looks like a headline.

Both include bold digits, which many other styles do not. That makes them the right choice when your text contains numbers — a date, a price, a score.

Use real formatting when it exists

Some apps already have bold. WhatsApp uses *asterisks*, Discord uses double asterisks, and any rich text editor has a toolbar. In those places real bold is better: it stays searchable, it adapts to the reader’s font, and assistive technology announces it as emphasis rather than reading out strange character names.

Unicode bold is for the fields that offer nothing: bios, display names, group subjects, form labels, spreadsheet cells and plain-text posts.

• Use markdown or a toolbar wherever the app provides one
• Use Unicode bold in bios, names and other unformatted fields
• Never bold a whole paragraph — it stops meaning anything

The accessibility trade-off

Unicode bold characters are not semantically bold. To software they are separate letters, so search will not match them, spell-check ignores them, and screen readers may spell them out or skip them. That is an acceptable cost for a decorative line in a bio and a real problem for a warning, a price or a deadline.

A good habit: if losing the text entirely would be a problem, keep it plain.
